First day session 2, Wednesday – Goodbye and hello :)

Like in a FIBA tournament, today we had a day off. People from first session were leaving, so transfers to the airport and another session was coming. Goodbyes and hellos. Some people stayed and some came before, so all in all today was no games and people could use pools, gym or go to the city center or the other resort of the complex for the beach. With this beautiful weather this day was like real vacation.

All participants got registered to the session and we started at 20.00 with the welcome from Kuba the main camp organizer and Buluc, who provided this awesome hotel, and again explanation of the tournament, now tomorrow we will start the play off of the senior tournament, which will be officiated by campers.

“Here and now” session by Dr Ridvan. He was discussing our psychological obstacles during the game.

Restarting our brain before the tomorrow’s hard day, we will start the run and then very early the first lecture of Carl.

See you all tomorrow and session 2 of REFEREE.PL is kicked off!!!!!

Final Day 4 Session 1 – Speak to the ones who inspire you!

Now, the last day of the final session arrived…

As this is already a tradition here in the morning again the entire group did a 7.15 run. As we want to take the most of last day, no one is tired, no one complains, and so in this mood we have started the first lecture of the day at 8.30 by Carl Jungebrand. All the instructors’ team came for this lecture. Mentioning that Costas had no lecture today and still he was there, because he also wants to learn. Impressive. Carl was telling us some important things. As referees we are never attacking, we hold the position, so we must defend the position.  This is mental versus psychical challenge. When you walk there, nothing is going to happen that you don't control! You need to know it! – Carl Jungebrand.

We spend 40 min talking about the toss. Jump ball – how to do it right? Sold movement, level of the ball when you start, there is no right technique, just be consistent with you own style, shoulder level of the ball, have surprise element.  What is really tossing… escorting the ball with your hands. πŸ™‚

The stage was back to Steve, so mechanics and court coverage continue. And also how to be a good partner. This is very visible if you are coming on the court just for yourself or coming on the court together as a team. This is a mental approach; this is willingness before the game.

Focus for today – to be a good partner! This means you do your job and keep in mind you are doing it with your partners. In between other he also said: You are the referee to the level of your experience.

And obvious table management – table it is your best friend and best enemy if something doesn't go ok, but if this happens it is your fault.

Then Steve shared his personal story of how he came to the top and what happened there. This story is mind-blowing, plus he is great story teller, so again all people will never forget it.

To be superior referee you must have spirit of the game! – Costas

Game is important. We must come to the happy end! – Costas

Then we had a mind experience lecture from Peter Papp. Do the exercises – use your fast thinking – free your mind – and just write. Write your dreams; on paper they are more touchable. Very relaxing presentation on how to approach your goals and how to plan the execution of them.

Everyone later had 3 half of games to referee and being watched by instructors. The best is after 3 days how you can communicate with the headset. This is great; instructor is talking to referees ear, and saying jokes, but mostly correcting their position and giving advices on the decisions.

As this is the final day we had the summary from all the instructors in the lecture room. They made many meaningful messages to us, we will be going home with the mind full of ideas of what to do before the season, and how to prepare the best for the coming season.

Then we had nice Closing Ceremony with certificates πŸ™‚

As Steve said: There are no goodbyes in basketball, there is only see you later, so see you later!

Session 1 Day 3 – In a mood of β€œ”We speak the same language in the court” – signals and mechanics

Today again we had an early wake up and the fitness session in the morning at 7.00, we have done a family picture, the first of the day! The temperature in the morning is very good to the outdoor activities; some people instead of run went to the pool.

After quick breakfast we have stated at 8.30 with Carl Jungebrand, who day before decided to come earlier just because there is so much he wanted to share that he needed extra time, of course all the group agreed in no time for early wake up from that reason πŸ™‚ Carl was talking about the 3-men mechanic and how to behave with it on the court and what are FIBA guidelines to use it the best way.

Then was time for Steve, as today’s topic is mechanics he continued with the Clips of Costas from the day before, but now pointing the mechanics and he was exactly showing us on the example of the Euroleague and FIBA referees where to go, and what is a “close down” and how to use it. Also we have a new term in use from Steve: “happy feet” is when you are standing in one place but doing step right, step left for nothing πŸ™‚ like dancing.

At the third lecture clips continued, so Costas took over, with the fast help of Pawel, who is the master in assisting with video clips. And we were talking about the situations. Travelling, yes or not, block/change yes or not, flop? All situations from the best referees in Europe we could recently watch in the play offs and finals and also the favorite of Costas to show, the clips of Kuba πŸ™‚ Costas is always brining the life examples, and as basketball evolves so fast in recent years, the fresh is the best, so we see now the same clips, as Euroleague referees will see in a week at the clinic in Istanbul.

Afternoon is always some games. Today we had all together 4 games until the evening and the lecture at the court from Carl. Carl did some slides on the wall and the campers were practicing the proper running from trail to new lead position under the FIBA eye and also the proper movements on the court in the triangle.

After the game for the feedback session we had a summary from Dr Ridvan. He did some surveys in the meantime and presented the results, he also asked day before some referees to use new techniques for distress and they were telling their stories of how this worked. These results were awesome and the stories shared were super interesting, I believe everyone shall do this exercise as it is helping you to be a better referee.

Day 2 Session 1 – Next generation of referees will be always better than previous one! – Carl Jungebrand

As recommended by Kuba 7.15 the group was running today as a fresh start of the day, having some stretching, lead by Veronika and Sergey.  First important decisions we had to make today before going to the court was what to eat for breakfast, as this buffet in Gloria Hotel is honestly spoiling us heavily πŸ™‚

So fed and happy we went to first session by Carl Jungebrand.

Carl was talking about raising standards of quality decisions by making analytical decision vs emotional decision. Also pointing that the call shall be fast, correct, simple and understandable. As referees we are not a random generator of calls! You need to practice, use your muscle memory, only 10k repetitions to take the action into the storage of the muscle memory J

Take away from the lecture: Stay with the play until the end of the action – mentally and physically

Remember the basics – In NBA they teach the referee how to run, we thought in the world cup referees how to blow the whistle.

As a second lecture of the day we had a video clips from Costas from Euroleague. So following the lecture of Carl, Costas said: “Whatever you have learned about psychological approach you need to transform to the court and be ready to use your whistle.” So we started to watch the videos and then the discussion opened. Travelling, offensive, defensive, sometimes need to see the play more than 10 times. Costas said:  “If we have to see one situation more than 10 times then the referee made the right call!!!” Small joke, but the important thing here is that what we agree here, how to call a situation, we need to stick to it and be consistent, same Costas is doing with the coaches after the end of the season.

“What we are teaching is one color, if we say for today is red than red it is!

As third lecture of the day we had for the first time at the REFEREE.PL an instructor from Canada – Stephen, who is one of the best active referees in the world getting nominations for the top tournaments. Stephen started officiating in the age of 28! He made tremendous career. One of the first’s things he said was that to meet your goal you need to know what you have to do for it, and one of the things on the list is to come to such camps!! Then Steve told us some stories from his personal experience that was supporting his idea of officiating. Steve: “Mark your presence, inspire your confidence, for your all referees team! Leadership and accuracy!” Then he said the obvious, but not all of us think this way: “Officiating is nothing more than taking care of business.  At work you know what to do, threat game the same way!” Steve talk was very emotional and found a way to campers, you could see everyone listened with eyes wide open and we have excided the time for the lecture by nearly 40 min. Then Steve underlined in the context of coming matches: “What you do at 11 am camp game is what you will do at your top level game!!!” So all the guys were getting ready before we start the tournament today.

After lunch there was some officiating to be done πŸ™‚ Tournament has started and crews were nominated. Only missing the referees from Qatar, whose plane was late, but then happily they arrived and we had the summary of the day all together having some feedback from the instructors.

So for the next day remember:

Officiating not to make mistakes – safe refereeing! Best leagues in the world are not looking for safe referees, take the risk!!!
