Session 2 LAST DAY of REFEREE.PL – You have a chance to officiate the best games in the world!

Last day of the second session arrived… Guys were very excited and went out of the frames and got creative. So instead of morning run campers went to the swimming pool to play water polo! Unfortunately there are no photos of this game as the paparazzo was sleeping 🙂

Same as in the first session in the last day of the camp Carl had the lecture about FIBA guidelines to mechanics. Therefore we talked almost an hour about the proper way to toss. So by solid movement, when you start to toss what is the level of the ball, and how to escort the ball with your hands 🙂

And if there is a mistake during jump ball, who is responsible for it. You are not there alone. All the ref team is responsible. Carl: “The best crew I officiated with is me myself and I, we never disagree, only sometimes” :)We watched clips from last World Championship by FIBA and NBA movie “Blind ref” starting with Will Smith.

Also since Carl is leaving he made his summary of the tournament right now and had many questions from the group. Even thought we were late for the games, all people were sitting and listening and taking as much from it as possible.

Still before the games Steve had an hour on pick and roll, how to evaluate it, we were breaking down the clips. This was a great lecture, super useful. Steve taught us how to have an active mindset for the screen. How to catch an isolated play and always to look for competitive match in your area of responsibility.

Now all the theoretical stuff we go to practice to the courts, as games are starting at 12.00. Today there are only semifinals and finals. As also this is the last day of the tournament. So winner must be chosen 🙂

Last lecture as cherry on the pie came a powerful message from Costas. We were watching Euroleague clips with the videos of post play and we were analyzing all together with Costas.

Costas: You gave chance to officiate the best games in the world! Then we have see the pictures from when Costas was officiating the media game last year. Good piece of history and experience talking through him, but also hope, hope for the next generation to come! Ans as we said many time in the camp, the next generation will be better!!

Then we had a closing ceremony with the diplomas, when everyone could say something from themselves. Amongst others we heard from one camper that: “Some people come from close distance, some travel the world and wherever Kuba would do the camp he will follow..” Exactly for such a people Kuba is doing this camp. Now the question of the evening:  When Kuba will announce the next location?

Hope you all go to home safe.

See you soon.

And hear you via the website and our Facebook profile.

Session 2 Day 3 – It is not how much we try; it is about the result that comes!

Gym, run, pool – today people divided and did different morning activities. Majority still went to run, lead by Paulina and Tomek, who used the exercise from FIBA.  Day started with the sun, but later was raining; we didn't care anyway, because the games were ongoing and in case wanted people could use the indoor pool.

Individual techniques subject by Carl Jungebrand. As yesterday Carl was teaching campers how to run, he added today: “I don't want referees to only run, I want them to referee as well.” We were watching clips and learning new FIBA approach for the mechanics and movements. Useful tips and tricks from Carl, and the instructors’ crew. Takeaways: “Whatever happened I am controlling”.

It is not how much we try, it is only the result that come, that we want!! – Carl.

Costas – I always show the real examples. So we watched a set of clips from Euroleague and were talking about the situations and how to interpret them properly. Many interesting situations from the season that has just finished. Also Costas advised:  “You cannot copy anyone, make yourself, the original is only one!” – Costas. Costas showed us also the Euroleague statistics after the season and how calls were distributed for the fouls and areas. Referee the spin move. Be a Superior referee.

Offensive/defensive –player to go to the defender, to go through the defender.

After officiating we had the summary of the day, from Costas, Kuba, Steve, who talked also about plenty important tips for when you are on the court. There was an issue today about the technical foul and so Steve spent 15 min to discuss the case. “Technical foul is easy, but you should use your personality to begin with.” – Steve.

Ridvan was closing the session of the day. We played a game to show that each of us is an individual and that we have to work on communication each and every single time, with the partners, score table and learn how to manage a communication with the coaches, players and audience. We were tired, but we laughed and it was good finish of the day.

Session 2 Day 2 – Be accountable, honest and get the call right!

Guess what was the first thing the campers did in the morning… the 7 am run of course. They even started before I came down to make the picture; the group had run away 🙂

So fresh and ready we started the first lecture of the day, 30 min earlier, as Carl has much to talk about to the referees. He was discussing analytical decision versus emotional decision making. Also how to build chemistry with the team, some new stuff, basic stuff, but all so much needed. We talked about the natural decision, flippism, random call generator, muscle memory and also the terminology from FIBA that we all need to know, ex. IOT (Individual Officiating Techniques), OP (Obvious Play), PC (Primary Coverage), DC (Dual Coverage),SC (Secondary Coverage), EC (Extended Coverage), RD (Referee the defense),  OA (Open Angle), CA (Closed Angle), CS (Cross step), CD (Close Down). There was a lot as well about the mechanics which is the topic of the day!

Then on the schedule was Steve – he share his experience from the court, as active referee, who officiated in between many others Olympics Beijing, and stories from there. We heard about how contacts impact the game, got reminded to admit our mistakes, learn from it, be accountable to your partners and also coaches. This is the right approach! Top referees do not complain and do not explain. Only work how to get better. Compete as a referee, have a desire to get better. Don't compete against each other. Compete against yourself.

For the first time in the camp we have Peter Papp from Hungary talking about very important thing, which is your mindset. Peter promised that at the end of the hour you will have a clear goal and a plan on how to achieve it. And it happened. Clear vision is a key aspect of success. Then we wrote our goals on the paper. Handwriting activates the subconscious – always write your goals!

Then we moved to the games and officiating. All the instructors were watching the games. When 4 games finished we had team picture and moved to the lecture of Carl in the pitch. We were watching some slides from the 3PO and how to run properly, after we moved to really practice it in the court and this was great! Running looking at Carl and making the call where you stop! Then all the referees practiced positioning in 3 men mechanics and were lead by Carl and Steve to take the right position when the ball moves.

Last talk of the day was Dr Ridvan presenting the results of the survey we took the other day and pictures, showing us mind perception in different state. Very interesting stuff! All campers were put to sleep and dream. And they have visualization homework 🙂

See you tomorrow. Now we rest!

First day session 2, Wednesday – Goodbye and hello :)

Like in a FIBA tournament, today we had a day off. People from first session were leaving, so transfers to the airport and another session was coming. Goodbyes and hellos. Some people stayed and some came before, so all in all today was no games and people could use pools, gym or go to the city center or the other resort of the complex for the beach. With this beautiful weather this day was like real vacation.
