Session 2 Day 2 – Be accountable, honest and get the call right!

Guess what was the first thing the campers did in the morning… the 7 am run of course. They even started before I came down to make the picture; the group had run away 🙂

So fresh and ready we started the first lecture of the day, 30 min earlier, as Carl has much to talk about to the referees. He was discussing analytical decision versus emotional decision making. Also how to build chemistry with the team, some new stuff, basic stuff, but all so much needed. We talked about the natural decision, flippism, random call generator, muscle memory and also the terminology from FIBA that we all need to know, ex. IOT (Individual Officiating Techniques), OP (Obvious Play), PC (Primary Coverage), DC (Dual Coverage),SC (Secondary Coverage), EC (Extended Coverage), RD (Referee the defense),  OA (Open Angle), CA (Closed Angle), CS (Cross step), CD (Close Down). There was a lot as well about the mechanics which is the topic of the day!

Then on the schedule was Steve – he share his experience from the court, as active referee, who officiated in between many others Olympics Beijing, and stories from there. We heard about how contacts impact the game, got reminded to admit our mistakes, learn from it, be accountable to your partners and also coaches. This is the right approach! Top referees do not complain and do not explain. Only work how to get better. Compete as a referee, have a desire to get better. Don't compete against each other. Compete against yourself.

For the first time in the camp we have Peter Papp from Hungary talking about very important thing, which is your mindset. Peter promised that at the end of the hour you will have a clear goal and a plan on how to achieve it. And it happened. Clear vision is a key aspect of success. Then we wrote our goals on the paper. Handwriting activates the subconscious – always write your goals!

Then we moved to the games and officiating. All the instructors were watching the games. When 4 games finished we had team picture and moved to the lecture of Carl in the pitch. We were watching some slides from the 3PO and how to run properly, after we moved to really practice it in the court and this was great! Running looking at Carl and making the call where you stop! Then all the referees practiced positioning in 3 men mechanics and were lead by Carl and Steve to take the right position when the ball moves.

Last talk of the day was Dr Ridvan presenting the results of the survey we took the other day and pictures, showing us mind perception in different state. Very interesting stuff! All campers were put to sleep and dream. And they have visualization homework 🙂

See you tomorrow. Now we rest!

First day session 2, Wednesday – Goodbye and hello :)

Like in a FIBA tournament, today we had a day off. People from first session were leaving, so transfers to the airport and another session was coming. Goodbyes and hellos. Some people stayed and some came before, so all in all today was no games and people could use pools, gym or go to the city center or the other resort of the complex for the beach. With this beautiful weather this day was like real vacation.

“Here and now” session by Dr Ridvan. He was discussing our psychological obstacles during the game.

Restarting our brain before the tomorrow’s hard day, we will start the run and then very early the first lecture of Carl.

Final Day 4 Session 1 – Speak to the ones who inspire you!

Now, the last day of the final session arrived…

As this is already a tradition here in the morning again the entire group did a 7.15 run. As we want to take the most of last day, no one is tired, no one complains, and so in this mood we have started the first lecture of the day at 8.30 by Carl Jungebrand. All the instructors’ team came for this lecture. Mentioning that Costas had no lecture today and still he was there, because he also wants to learn. Impressive. Carl was telling us some important things. As referees we are never attacking, we hold the position, so we must defend the position.  This is mental versus psychical challenge. When you walk there, nothing is going to happen that you don't control! You need to know it! – Carl Jungebrand.

We spend 40 min talking about the toss. Jump ball – how to do it right? Sold movement, level of the ball when you start, there is no right technique, just be consistent with you own style, shoulder level of the ball, have surprise element.  What is really tossing… escorting the ball with your hands. 🙂

The stage was back to Steve, so mechanics and court coverage continue. And also how to be a good partner. This is very visible if you are coming on the court just for yourself or coming on the court together as a team. This is a mental approach; this is willingness before the game.

Focus for today – to be a good partner! This means you do your job and keep in mind you are doing it with your partners. In between other he also said: You are the referee to the level of your experience.

And obvious table management – table it is your best friend and best enemy if something doesn't go ok, but if this happens it is your fault.

Then Steve shared his personal story of how he came to the top and what happened there. This story is mind-blowing, plus he is great story teller, so again all people will never forget it.

To be superior referee you must have spirit of the game! – Costas

Game is important. We must come to the happy end! – Costas

Then we had a mind experience lecture from Peter Papp. Do the exercises – use your fast thinking – free your mind – and just write. Write your dreams; on paper they are more touchable. Very relaxing presentation on how to approach your goals and how to plan the execution of them.

Everyone later had 3 half of games to referee and being watched by instructors. The best is after 3 days how you can communicate with the headset. This is great; instructor is talking to referees ear, and saying jokes, but mostly correcting their position and giving advices on the decisions.

As this is the final day we had the summary from all the instructors in the lecture room. They made many meaningful messages to us, we will be going home with the mind full of ideas of what to do before the season, and how to prepare the best for the coming season.

Then we had nice Closing Ceremony with certificates 🙂

As Steve said: There are no goodbyes in basketball, there is only see you later, so see you later!
