PADDY and team Luxemburg – here comes the FIBA experience

Very interesting personality, connected to our camp from many years, big sport passionate, who is passing his love to basketball to young team from his country, who is now coming with him to the camp, five people together. Please see the story of Patrick below.

Well just in some words… but for my age, plenty of stories and lots of experience ☺

I started to be a referee season 1989/90, and did year by year my C-B-A license in Luxemburg, in 2005, in Riga I passed the FIBA license.

Former player, but not so successful, we dropped down from top league to second league, I also did coach for 2 seasons a youth team (Minis) early 1990’s.

I go to international tournaments, camps, ex. Wonderful Copenhagen Cup, where all started in 1998, followed by Zehlendorfer Pfingstturnier in Berlin, CanDo Basketball Camp in UK and for 12 years in a row Scania Cup in Sodertalje, and many others in Sweden, Denmark, Czech Republic, and after 2009/10/13/14 I participate at the REFEREE.PL camp now for the 5th time.

Camps are very important for young referee, but also for “experienced” to prepare the season and to stay tuned. Like the European youth championships, where all FIBA referees participate all summer (I will be in Sofia for the U16 men, division B).

To be a referee is not always easy, but I would not change, if somebody would ask me, if I would do the same again. Now when I see, my career goes slowly to the end, and I take already a small look back, I visited so many places and countries, probably I would never have visited, but there are still some missing on my map ☺. In my mobile phone “facebook-whatsup-skype-instagram” or similar, I have at least one number in every country I visited or from friends involved in basketball, as referee, coach, player… All this nobody can steal away, and there are so many stories to tell or perhaps write down once…

In Luxemburg I am in the top league for more or less 20 years, and I am the head of the referees and represent the referees at the federations board. I am also part of our instructors and help to organize the clinics and the different referee degrees. I also make the nominations for the referees for all leagues, except the top leagues, because I’m involved.

IMG 3336

In private, I work for the government on court at the commercial department (bankruptcies and commercial affairs). I run 10K races and half-marathons all over the world, so for 2016, I have Dublin, Lisbon and Las Vegas on the list. Other hobbies are fishing, where I participated in 2015 and 2016 at the world championships, (where the result for us was not so important, because we are not professionals, but like in refereeing, got lots of experience and new friendship).

Like all the years, I do not travel alone to the camps, so for this year’s camp in Romania, we will be a groups of 5 referees from our small country, so 5 out of ca 120 active referees, one woman and 4 men.

It’s a perfect mixed group, within 3 more or less experienced referees, Pit, Tom (who missed only a few Kuba camps) and me from the TOTAL League in Luxemburg, one very potential young lady (Cathy), who passed the step to the 2nd league men/TOTAL league woman early this year, and one rookie (Michaijl) who only starts his 4th season, but already did some games in the Top League women last season. This camp is the perfect preparation to start into the new season.

Thank you Paddy and the team!!

In Cluj you will meet Romanian referee from Austria – Tiberiu Lucaciu

Tiberiu is an economist, who works for Coca-Cola Austria as an area sales manager in Vienna. He grew up in Romania, and decided at the age of 19 to move to Vienna to study Business Administration. During his studies at the University of Vienna, he started his officiating career back in 2005 in the youth leagues.

image

After working hard year after year, he was invited to the Kick Off for Austrian league referees in 2009, and began to officiate 2nd League Men games and 1st League Women. In October 2012 he joined the 1st League Men (Admiral Basketball Bundesliga). Until now he officiated more than 140 First Divison games including the 4 Final of the 2014/2015 ABL season and also the Cup Final 2016.

image 1

He has been to three Kuba Camps: Tallin 2012, Bielsko 2013, Antalya 2015 and is very happy to join Cluj 2016. He has also been in Sakarya(TUR) 2013 and Saint-Chamond(FRA) 2015 on tournaments organized by FIBA for Potential FIBA Referees.

MKIV4343

People in Austria ask me why I go to the same camp every year. My answer is very simple: for me REFEREE.PL Camp is the best referee training camp in Europe. Top instructors, hardworking people and very good games.

Campers introduction – AMALIA MARCHIS – referee, tournament organizer in Cluj, basketball passionate

Very soon we start first session of REFEREE.PL in Romania. Continuing the popular article series from last year, which was the introduction of camp participants written by themselves, I would like to kick it off this year with an important person – Amalia Marchis, who is not only the camp participant, but she is also working for the local organizing committee, helping to deliver the highest level of camp for you. She happens to be a huge basketball passionate, and so she is sharing with us as well the history of the basketball tradition in Cluj in Romania.

season 2015 2016 frendly game

I am involved in basketball, as referee and also as organizing committees’ member, so is a lucky mix between passion and work.

Season 2015/2016:

  • level: Romanian National League, Man
  • FIBA Europe Clinic for National Referees in Bucharest, Romania

ISF World Championship Finals

I had the first contact with “refereeing” in 2006, when I moved from my small city of birth, situated in the North of the country, in Cluj-Napoca. It was a big change for me but I took everything as a challenge.

2007 was the year when I had the opportunity to be part of the project “The big contest – 72 hours of basketball – Sibiu, Romania”, where I was nominated as referee, a real marathon of officiating.

National League

International camps attended:

  • 2015 CanDoBasketball Camp (Sofia, Bulgaria)
  • 2013 FIBA Europe International Camp for Girls U15 (Postonja, Slovenia)
  • 2013 CanDoBasketball Camp (Sofia, Bulgaria)
  • 2011 FIBA Europe International Camp for Girls U15 (Postonja, Slovenia)

International tournaments:

  • 2014 European Universities Games Rotterdam – the finals
  • 2015 ISF World Championship Limoges – the finals – the finals
  • 2016 European Universities Games Zagreb

Zagreb 2016

During last 10 years, I took part, as volunteer, at all European Championships organized in Romania. Each competition is something new, a good opportunity to be in contact every year with referees from all over the world, to “steal” something from everybody, to grow in the middle of a referees group.

Basketball has a long tradition in Romania, Romanian Basketball Federation being one of the 13th founders of FIBA. The basketball has evolved through the years from the early ages when it was played outdoor, to the modern game that in now attracting more and more spectators.

Cluj basketball history has overcome six decades. The promote actions of basketball in Cluj started in schools since 1938, the first panels being installed in the courtyard of Catholic Gymnasium. Learning and practicing basketball was first performed at the University, with the foundation of athletic club KEAC in 1940, after which, in 1942, reached the schools.

muresan ghita

In over 60 years of history, Cluj basketball boasts big-name coaches and players who have done honor not only to the city, but also to the national teams at various levels. During the ’80, the local women team ruled national basketball, winning 13 titles (10 in a row) and reached European Champions Cup semifinal. Also, Cluj gave the first and only Romanian player who ever played in the NBA: “Big” Ghita Muresan. (https://en.wikipedia.org).

Nowadays, basketball in Cluj-Napoca is the king sport. The number of people involved in basketball is growing every year, from children who start playing basketball at early ages, to devoted fans, sponsors and local community.

Cluj-Napoca is fortunate to have the biggest and most modern gym in the country, a polyvalent hall with more than 7,000 seats, one of FIBA EuroBasket 2017 venues.
This gym is the main venue for hosting the camp and it will be joined by the older Horia Demian Sports Hall (2,500 seats).

For both Cluj-Napoca and Romania, Referee.pl is the first and biggest international camp for basketball referees.

I attend for the first time this camp and it is double exciting for me. As referee, I can’t wait to improve, to be better than I was before. As part of the referees’ local organizing team, I put, together with my colleagues, as much energy we have to build the highest standards for “camp’s house”.

Balkanic Next Star Cup FIBA Clinic Bucharest 2015

For local organizing committee it is a big challenge to bring together, for 3 days, strong international men and women tournaments, as well as youth ones.
We are welcoming referees from all over the world to learn from the valuable experienced of the world known instructors invited to the camp and also share a special time and make wonderful memories.

Thank you very much Amalia, see you next month in Cluj-Napoca!!!
